High Plains Food Bank receives 5,000 lbs. of apples from United Family

On Wednesday, United Supermarkets, Market Street and Amigos donated 5,000 pounds of apples to the High Plains Food Bank as part of the Take a Bite Out of Hunger program.

“In a recent survey, we learned that 88 percent of our rural neighbors who responded ate less than one serving of fruit daily during the prior week,” said Zack Wilson, executive director of High Plains Food Bank in a news release. “Thanks to this generous donation from The United Family and FirstFruits, we’ll be able to quickly distribute 5,000 pounds of fresh, healthy apples to individuals and families across the Texas Panhandle. We’re grateful for their continued partnership in alleviating hunger by providing healthy food to our neighbors.”

The donation is part of a larger donation of more than 50,000 pounds of apples across Texas and New Mexico, according to a news release. In the first 12 years of the Take a Bite Out of Hunger program, United Family stores have donated more than half a million pounds of apples and fed more than 167,000 families. With the program now in its 13th year, the company continues to add to that total.

“The United Family feels very blessed to be in the position to be making these donations for the thirteenth year in a row,” said Joseph Bunting, produce business director for The United Family. “We know just how important donations of fresh produce can be for food banks and their clients. We are so grateful for this partnership with FirstFruits and the hard work of our team members across Texas and New Mexico.”

This donation marks a continuing commitment by The United Family as an original partner of the Take a Bite of Hunger program, sponsored by FirstFruits Farms, which created the program to help feed the underserved while bringing attention to the problem of food insecurity across the country.
