NEW DELHI: The modified food security scheme to provide 5 kg free food grain monthly to 81.3 crore people across the country under the National Food Security Act will be rolled out on Sunday.
The government has directed general managers of Food Corporation of India (FCI) to visit three ration shops daily during the first week to “review and report”. They will have to submit daily reports.
The cabinet chaired by PM Narendra Modi had approved the scheme to make the entitlement of food grain for the poor under the NFSA free for the whole of 2023. With this, the government also ended the PM Garib Kalyan Ann Yojna which was launched in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.
The food ministry said that Union food secretary Sanjeev Chopra held a meeting with all state food secretaries on Friday on the distribution of free food grains and to resolve all technical issues
The ministry has also issued advisories to states and UTs on the mechanism to provide dealer’s margin (of the ratio shop owners) for distributing food grain to beneficiaries.
